A Bit of History

Sugar Cane in 1980

Here ia a picture of this area when it was planted in sugar cane, and before the area was subdivided. The outline shows the parcel that was to be made by the subdivision. The actual boundaries are pretty close to this.

The parcel is divided by a small streamlet, which is usually dry. Although it may look flat in this picture, it is has a very complex topography.

I believe this map was made from aerial photographs made about 1980.

Macadamia Nuts in 2000

After the lots were subdivided, most of them were planted with macadamia nut trees. This picture shows how the trees. The lots were sold in 2001, and this one was sold to a couple from Japan. The Hamakua Sunrise company managed the lots for the foreign folks for several years after that.

This image, and the ones following are from Google Earth and then enhanced to show the detail more clearly. The slight difference between the outline and the roads is an indication of the alignment error in historic data on Google Earth. These historic imagery is precious!

Ten Years Later in 2010

The trees are maintained, but fast growing rubbish trees are becoming established along the little brooklet and in some internal areas.

Amauulu Road is the road along the top part of the outline. The dark trees along Amauulu Road are in two rows: Ironwood, and Cooks Pine. They are getting bigger, and occasionally drop limbs on the road. About five years earlier the Amauulu Road was paved up to the upper corner of this lot.

Nine Years After That in 2019

This lot as not been maintained, and rubbish trees ae everywhere. The macadamia nut trees are almost shaded out, and the few macadamia nuts that fall to the ground are treats for the pigs, which now consider this their home.

Note that the trees that lined Amauulu are gone. The bad news is they are now being replaced by fast-growing rubbish trees.

Here we are in 2022

By now only a few macadamia nut trees have survived. The Japanese owners decided to sell, and the lot is now owned by amauulu.com. What will become of this lot?

I suspect our friend CAT 299D3 (xe) will have a say in that..
